The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 I am a trustworthy Messengers sent to you. 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will you be left secure in this here, 146 in the midst of gardens and fountains, 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 Do not obey the order of the wasteful, 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful." 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it: 157 But the Penalty seized them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe. 158 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful. 159
