The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them: Will you not guard (against evil)? 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it (my Message of Islamic Monotheism), my reward is only from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists). 145 "Will you be left secure in that which you have here? 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 and cornfields and date-palms laden with juicy fruits? 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 And obey not the command of the prodigal, 151 and spread mischief in the land rather than set things right." 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 Thou art but a human being like unto us. So bring thou a sign if thou art of the truth-tellers. 154 He said: This is a she-camel; she shall have her portion of water, and you have your portion of water on an appointed time; 155 “And do not touch her with evil intentions for the punishment of the Great Day will seize you.” 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 The punishment therefore seized them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
