The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 Shall ye be left secure in that which is here before us. 146 “In gardens and water springs?” 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 and pay no heed to the counsel of those who are given to excesses 151 those who spread corruption in the land instead of putting things right." 152 They said, "You are only of those affected by magic. 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 He said: (Behold) this she-camel. She hath the right to drink (at the well), and ye have the right to drink, (each) on an appointed day. 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it: 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
