The Thamud accused the messengers of lies. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: fear ye not? 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 Will you be left secure in this, 146 amidst the gardens, springs, 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 And do not obey the order of the transgressors, 151 and spread mischief in the land rather than set things right." 152 They said: "Surely you are deluded. 153 "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful." 154 He said: (Behold) this she-camel. She hath the right to drink (at the well), and ye have the right to drink, (each) on an appointed day. 155 "Touch her not with harm, lest the Penalty of a Great Day seize you." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
