[AND the tribe of] Thamud gave the lie to [one of God's] message-hearers 141 When their fellowman Saleh said to them, "Do you not fear?" 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 In gardens and watersprings. 147 And corn-fields and palm-trees whereof the spathes are fine? 148 You hew dwellings in mountains and exult in that. 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 "Those who spread turmoil in the earth, and do no reform." 152 They said, "You are under a magic spell." 153 You are a mere mortal like us. Show us a miracle if you are telling the Truth". 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And indeed your Lord - only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
