Thamud (people) belied the Messenger. 141 When their brother Salih (Saleh) said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him? 142 Surely I am a faithful apostle to you 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 I do not ask any recompense of you for this. My reward is due from none but the Lord of all the worlds. 145 Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death], 146 among gardens and fountains, 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 You hew dwellings in mountains and exult in that. 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 He said: This is a she-camel; she shall have her portion of water, and you have your portion of water on an appointed time; 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 They slew the she-camel, but later became regretful 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful. 159
