The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear Allah? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit? 148 You hew dwellings in mountains and exult in that. 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They said, "You are only bewitched and insane. 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 And touch her not with ill, lest there take hold of you the torment of a Mighty Day. 156 But they hamstrung her, then regretted; 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 159
