The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 I am a trustworthy Messengers sent to you. 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] -- 146 In gardens and springs. 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 And obey not the command of the prodigal, 151 Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend." 152 They said, "You are only of those affected by magic. 153 "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful." 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful. 159
