[AND the tribe of] Thamud gave the lie to [one of God's] message-hearers 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 "And corn-fields and date-palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)? 148 and that you will [always be able to] hew dwellings out of the mountains with [the same] great skill?" 149 Have fear of God and obey me. 150 Do not obey the orders of the transgressors 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 They replied: 'Surely, you are one of those bewitched. 153 Thou art but a mortal like us. So bring some token if thou art of the truthful. 154 Replied he: "This she-camel shall have a share of water, and you shall have a share of water, on the days appointed [therefor]; 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
