The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 Recall when their brother Salih said to them: "Have you no fear?" 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death], 146 among gardens and fountains, 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 "And you carve houses out of mountains with great skill. 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 And do not obey the order of the transgressors, 151 “Those who spread turmoil in the earth, and do no reform.” 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 You are a mere mortal like us. Show us a miracle if you are telling the Truth". 154 He said: (Behold) this she-camel. She hath the right to drink (at the well), and ye have the right to drink, (each) on an appointed day. 155 “And do not touch her with evil intentions for the punishment of the Great Day will seize you.” 156 But they hamstrung her and then regretted it. 157 So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Your Lord, He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
