Thamud denied the messengers 141 when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 145 (Do you think) you will be left secure here 146 amidst the gardens, springs, 147 and cornfields and date-palms laden with juicy fruits? 148 hewing out houses in the mountains and taking pride in your skill? 149 Therefor keep your duty to Allah and obey me, 150 Do not obey the order of the wasteful, 151 who corrupt in the earth, and do not reform' 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 But they hamstrung her and then regretted it. 157 So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
