Thamud (people) belied the Messenger. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 “And I do not ask from you any fee for it; my reward is only upon the Lord Of The Creation.” 145 Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] -- 146 in the midst of gardens and fountains, 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 “And do not follow those who exceed the limits.” 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 They said, "You are only bewitched and insane. 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 Do not touch her with malice so that punishment of a dreadful day seizes you' 156 But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it: 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 Your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 159
