The Thamud accused the messengers of lies. 141 When their brother Salih (Saleh) said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in this, 146 amidst the gardens, springs, 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill. 149 Fear Allah and obey me 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. 152 They said: "You are only of those bewitched! 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 "Touch her not with harm, lest the Penalty of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 159
