The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 144 I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)." 152 They said: "Surely you are deluded. 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed, 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and then they became regretful: 157 So the torment took hold of them: verily herein is a sign, but most of them are not believers. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
