The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me: 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it (my Message of Islamic Monotheism), my reward is only from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists). 145 Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death], 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 And corn-fields and palm-trees whereof the spathes are fine? 148 And hew ye out houses in the mountains skilfully! 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 And obey not the command of the extravagant. 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 They said, "You are only bewitched and insane. 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 Do not treat her unkindly or the punishment of a grievous day will fall on you." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and then they became regretful: 157 and the chastisement seized them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
