(The tribe of) Thamud denied the messengers (of Allah) 141 When their fellowman Saleh said to them, “Do you not fear?” 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 Shall ye be left secure in that which is here before us. 146 Within gardens and springs 147 “And fields and palm-trees, with delicate tendrils?” 148 and that you will [always be able to] hew dwellings out of the mountains with [the same] great skill?" 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 "And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs, leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners], 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 They said: "Surely you are deluded. 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 But they hamstrung her; and on the morrow were repentant, 157 and the chastisement seized them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
