The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih (Saleh) said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him? 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 I do not ask any recompense of you for this. My reward is due from none but the Lord of all the worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in this, 146 “In gardens and water springs?” 147 “And fields and palm-trees, with delicate tendrils?” 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 Have fear of God and obey me. 150 Do not obey the order of the wasteful, 151 “Those who spread turmoil in the earth, and do no reform.” 152 They said: thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day." 156 But they killed her, and then they became regretful. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 Yet verily your Lord is mighty and merciful. 159
