(The tribe of) Thamud denied the messengers (of Allah) 141 when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] -- 146 Within gardens and springs 147 And cornfields and palm-trees having fine spadices? 148 Will you still hew your dwellings in the mountains? 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 And do not obey the order of the transgressors, 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 They replied, "Surely you are bewitched. 153 “You are just a human like us; therefore bring some sign if you are truthful.” 154 Replied he: "This she-camel shall have a share of water, and you shall have a share of water, on the days appointed [therefor]; 155 "Touch her not with harm, lest the Penalty of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful. 159
