Thamood, belied their Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 Verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 143 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 144 For this I ask of you no wage; my wage falls only upon the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] -- 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 "And you carve houses out of mountains with great skill. 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 And do not obey the bidding of the extravagant, 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 They said: thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 Replied he: "This she-camel shall have a share of water, and you shall have a share of water, on the days appointed [therefor]; 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it: 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful. 159
