Thamud (people) belied the Messenger. 141 Recall when their brother Salih said to them: "Have you no fear?" 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds. 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 among gardens and fountains, 147 sown fields and palmtrees, with slender spathes. 148 And hew ye out houses in the mountains skilfully! 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched; 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed, 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 Then they hamstrung her; and then they became regretful. 157 So the torment took hold of them: verily herein is a sign, but most of them are not believers. 158 Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful. 159
