[AND the tribe of] Thamud gave the lie to [one of God's] message-hearers 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 So keep your duty to Allah and obey me. 144 “And I do not ask from you any fee for it; my reward is only upon the Lord Of The Creation.” 145 "Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here and now? 146 "In gardens and springs. 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill. 149 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me; 150 Do not obey the order of the wasteful, 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 He said: This is a she-camel; she shall have her portion of water, and you have your portion of water on an appointed time; 155 Do not touch her with malice so that punishment of a dreadful day seizes you' 156 So they hamstrung her, and in the morning could only regret. 157 So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 159
