The Thamud accused the messengers of lies. 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 (Do you think) you will be left secure here 146 amidst gardens and springs 147 And cornfields and palm-trees having fine spadices? 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 And do not obey the order of the transgressors, 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 They said, "You are only of those affected by magic. 153 You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful." 154 He said, “This is the she-camel – one day shall be her turn to drink, and on the other appointed day, shall be your turn.” 155 and do her no harm, lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!" 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and then they became regretful: 157 and torment struck them. In this there is evidence of the Truth, yet many people do not have any faith. 158 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
