Thamood cried lies to the Envoys 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 “I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger of Allah to you.” 143 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 "And corn-fields and date-palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)? 148 "And you carve houses out of mountains with great skill. 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 "And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs, leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners], 151 who corrupt in the earth, and do not reform' 152 They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched; 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 Do not treat her unkindly or the punishment of a grievous day will fall on you." 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 So the torment took hold of them: verily herein is a sign, but most of them are not believers. 158 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
