Thamood, belied their Messengers. 141 When their fellowman Saleh said to them, “Do you not fear?” 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 145 "Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here and now? 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 And cornfields and palm-trees having fine spadices? 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 Have fear of God and obey me. 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 They said, “You are under a magic spell.” 153 "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful." 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day." 156 But they hamstrung her, then regretted; 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful. 159
