The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 Verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 "Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here and now? 146 amidst the gardens, springs, 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 hewing out houses in the mountains and taking pride in your skill? 149 So fear Allah, and obey me. 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They replied: 'Surely, you are one of those bewitched. 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 so the punishment came down upon them. Surely in that there is a sign, but most of them would not believe. 158 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 159
