Thamood cried lies to the Envoys 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds. 145 Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death], 146 "In gardens and springs. 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 Fear Allah and obey me 150 and pay no heed to the counsel of those who are given to excesses 151 those who spread corruption in the land instead of putting things right." 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 You are naught but a mortal like ourselves; so bring a sign if you are one of the truthful. 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 They slew the she-camel, but later became regretful 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. 159
