The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 "Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here and now? 146 In gardens and fountains, 147 farms, and palm-trees in thick groves, 148 hewing out houses in the mountains and taking pride in your skill? 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. 152 They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel; it has a right to drink (water), and you have a right to drink (water) (each) on a day, known. 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers. 158 And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. 159
