[AND the tribe of] Thamud gave the lie to [one of God's] message-hearers 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me: 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 “Will you be left peacefully in these favours over here?” 146 "In gardens and springs. 147 and cornfields and date-palms laden with juicy fruits? 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 So fear Allah, and obey me. 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 They said, “You are under a magic spell.” 153 “You are just a human like us; therefore bring some sign if you are truthful.” 154 He said, "Here is a she-camel. She shall have her turn of drinking, as you have yours, each on an appointed day, 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it: 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 159
