The Romans (Al-Room)
60 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Splitting (Al-Inshiqaaq) before The Spider (Al-Ankaboot)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ Alif. Lam. Mim. 1 The Romans have been conquered 2 In a near land, and they, after being vanquished, shall overcome, 3 within a few years: [for] with God rests all power of decision, first and last. On that day the believers too will have cause to rejoice, 4 With the help of Allah; He helps whomever He wills; and only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 5 This is the promise of God. God does not ignore His promise, but many people do not know. 6 They know only the visible worldly life; and are totally neglectful of the Hereafter. 7 Have they never learned to think for themselves? God has not created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them without [an inner] truth and a term set [by Him]: and yet, behold, there are many people who stubbornly deny the truth that they are destined to meet their Sustainer! 8 Have they not travelled on the earth and seen how the others before them had met their end? They were far more powerful than them, furrowed the earth and colonised it far more than they; and their apostles came to them with visible signs. It was surely not for God to wrong them, they wronged themselves. 9 Therefore evil was the end of those who did evil, for they denied the signs of God and made fun of them. 10
