The Romans (Al-Room)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Alif-Laam-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 The Romans have been defeated 2 in the lands close-by; yet it is they who, notwithstanding this their defeat, shall be victorious 3 Within a few years. Allah's is the command before and after; and on that day the believers shall rejoice, 4 in God's succour: [for] He gives succour to whomever He wills, since He alone is almighty, a dispenser of grace. 5 The promise of Allah! Allah does not fail His promise, yet most people do not know. 6 They only know the palpable life of this world, and are oblivious of the Hereafter. 7 Ponder they not in their minds: Allah hath not created the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain save with a purpose and for a term appointed? And verily many men in the meeting of their Lord are unbelievers. 8 What, have they not journeyed in the land and beheld how was the end of those before them? They were stronger than themselves in might, and they ploughed up the earth and cultivated it more than they themselves have cultivated it; and their Messengers came to them with the clear signs; and God would never wrong them, but themselves they wronged. 9 Evil was the end of those evil-doers, for they gave the lie to Allah's Signs and scoffed at them. 10
