The Romans (Al-Room)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Alif-Lam-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. 1 The Romans have been defeated (by the Persians) 2 in the lands close-by; yet it is they who, notwithstanding this their defeat, shall be victorious 3 In some few years. Allah's is the command, before and after. And on that day the believers will rejoice. 4 in God's succour: [for] He gives succour to whomever He wills, since He alone is almighty, a dispenser of grace. 5 The promise of God! God fails not His promise, but most men do not know it. 6 They know an outward part of this life, but of the Everlasting Life they are inattentive. 7 Have they not inwardly pondered – that Allah has not created the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, except with truth and a fixed term? And indeed many people deny the meeting with their Lord. 8 Have they not travelled on the earth and seen how the others before them had met their end? They were far more powerful than them, furrowed the earth and colonised it far more than they; and their apostles came to them with visible signs. It was surely not for God to wrong them, they wronged themselves. 9 The end of the evil-doers was terrible, for they had rejected the revelations of God and mocked them. 10
