۞ [And God will thus command:] "Assemble all those who were bent on evildoing, together with others of their ilk and [with] all that they were wont to worship 22 apart from Allah, and direct them to the path of Hell, 23 And halt them, to be questioned: 24 [They will be asked], "What is [wrong] with you? Why do you not help each other?" 25 Nay! on that day they shall be submissive. 26 And they will turn to one another, and question one another. 27 They will say: verily ye! ye were wont to come unto us Imposing. 28 They will answer, “You yourselves did not have faith!” 29 And we had over you no authority, but ye were a people exorbitant. 30 "So now has been proved true, against us, the word of our Lord that we shall indeed (have to) taste (the punishment of our sins). 31 For we had led you astray. In fact we ourselves were astray." 32 Truly, that Day, they will (all) share in the Penalty. 33 Thus do We treat the culprits. 34 For when it was said to them: 'There is no god except Allah' they were always proud 35 And said: Shall we forsake our gods for a mad poet? 36 Nay, but he brought the Truth, and he confirmed those sent (before him). 37 Lo! (now) verily ye taste the painful doom - 38 and be rewarded only according to your deeds." 39 Except the chosen creatures of God, 40 there is waiting for them a known provision; 41 fruits of various kinds; and they shall be honoured, 42 In gardens of delight, 43 sitting face to face upon couches, 44 a goblet from a spring shall be passed round to them 45 clear, delightful to those who drink it: 46 Free from headiness; nor will they suffer intoxication therefrom. 47 And with them will be chaste females, restraining their glances (desiring none except their husbands), with wide and beautiful eyes. 48 (Pure) as they were hidden eggs (of the ostrich). 49 So one among them turns to the other, questioning. – 50 one of them will say, "I had a friend, 51 who would say: "Are you among the believers (of the resurrection)? 52 [that] after we have died and become mere dust and bones we shall, forsooth, be brought to judgment?"' 53 And he will reply: 'Are you looking down (into Hell)' 54 Then looketh he and seeth him in the depth of hell. 55 And he will say: by Allah, thou hadst wellnigh causedest me to perish. 56 If not for the favor of my Lord, I would have been of those brought in [to Hell]. 57 Is it then that we are not going to die, 58 Save our first death, and are we not to be tormented? 59 Verily, this - this indeed - is the triumph supreme!" 60 For the like of this let all strive, who wish to strive. 61 Is this not a better reward than the tree of Zaqqum 62 Indeed, We have made it a torment for the wrongdoers. 63 Verily, it is a tree that springs out of the bottom of Hell-fire, 64 The shoots of its fruit-stalks are like the heads of Shayatin (devils); 65 And indeed, they will eat from it and fill with it their bellies. 66 And afterward, lo! thereupon they have a drink of boiling water 67 And once again: Verily, the blazing fire is their ultimate goal 68 They found their fathers had gone astray; 69 and [now] they make haste to follow in their footsteps! 70 yet before them most of the ancients went astray, 71 And assuredly We sent among them warners. 72 and behold, how was the end of them that were warned, 73 Not so the chosen servants of God. 74
