Jonah, too, was one of the Messengers. 139 He abandoned his people 140 And then they cast lots and he was the one who lost, 141 and the fish swallowed him while he was blaming himself. 142 Had he not been of them who glorify Allah, 143 He would have stayed in its belly till the day the dead are raised. 144 ۞ But We threw him on a wide bare tract of land while he was ill; 145 and We caused a gourd tree to grow over him. 146 And We sent him to a hundred thousand (folk) or more 147 and they believed in him: so We let them live in ease for a while. 148 Now ask them whether your Lord has daughters, whereas they have sons. 149 Or created We the angels females while they were present? 150 Pay heed! It is their slander that they say. – 151 Allah has begotten; and most surely they are liars. 152 Did He (then) choose daughters rather than sons? 153 What ails you that you judge in such a wise? 154 Do you not understand? 155 Or have ye a clear warrant? 156 Then bring your book, if you are truthful. 157 And they imagine kinship between him and the jinn, whereas the jinn know well that they will be brought before (Him). 158 God is too glorious to be described as they describe Him 159 Except His chosen creatures who do not. 160 For, verily, neither ye nor those ye worship- 161 You cannot tempt [anyone] away from Him 162 except him who shall roast in Hell. 163 [The angels say], "Every single one of us has his place assigned: 164 Lo! we, even we are they who set the ranks, 165 and we are of those who glorify Allah.” 166 What though they would say, 167 "If we had a message from [those of] the former peoples, 168 "We would have indeed been the chosen slaves of Allah (true believers of Islamic Monotheism)!" 169 Yet they disbelieve therein. Presently they shall come to know. 170 Already Our Word has preceded to Our servants, the Envoys; 171 That they verily would be helped, 172 and Our armies shall be the victors. 173 So turn thou from them for a while, 174 And watch them (how they fare), and they soon shall see (how thou farest)! 175 So are they being impatient for Our punishment? 176 When it comes down on their plains, it will be an evil dawn for those who had been warned. 177 And leave them for a time. 178 And see thou: they themselves shall presently see. 179 Too glorious is your Lord, the Lord of power, for what they ascribe to Him. 180 And peace be on the Messengers! 181 and praise be to God, the Lord of all the Worlds. 182
