If anyone withdraws himself from remembrance of (Allah) Most Gracious, We appoint for him an evil one, to be an intimate companion to him. 36 and they bar them from the Way, though they themselves think that they are guided. 37 To the extent that when the disbeliever will be brought to Us, he will say to his devil, “Alas – if only there was the distance* of east and west, between you and me!” – so what an evil companion** he is! (* Had I not listened to you. **They will be bound together in chains.) 38 It shall not profit you today, since you did evil, that you are partners in the chastisement. 39 What! can you then make the deaf to hear or guide the blind and him who is in clear error? 40 And if We take thee away, We surely shall take vengeance on them, 41 Or (if) We show you that wherewith We threaten them, then verily, We have perfect command over them. 42 Therefore hold fast to that which has been revealed to you; surely you are on the right path. 43 And verily it is an admonition unto thee and thy people; and presently ye will be questioned. 44 You can ask Our Messengers whom We sent before you if We had commanded them to worship other gods besides the Beneficent God?" 45
