As for one who turns away from the remembrance of the Gracious God, We appoint for him a devil, who will become his intimate companion. 36 Satan will prevent them from the right path while they think that they have the right guidance. 37 Till, when (such a one) comes to Us, he says [to his Qarin (Satan / devil companion)] "Would that between me and you were the distance of the two easts (or the east and west)" a worst (type of) companion (indeed)! 38 It will profit you not this Day (O you who turn away from Allah's remembrance and His worship, etc.) as you did wrong, (and) that you will be sharers (you and your Qarin) in the punishment. 39 Canst thou then make the deaf to hear, or give direction to the blind or to such as (wander) in manifest error? 40 Whether We take thee away, We shall take vengeance upon them, 41 Or (if) We show thee that wherewith We threaten them; for lo! We have complete command of them. 42 So hold thou fast unto that which has been revealed unto thee; surely thou art upon a straight path. 43 and, verily, this [revelation] shall indeed become [a source of] eminence for thee and thy people: but in time you all will be called to account [for what you have done with it]. 44 And ask those We sent before you of Our messengers; have We made besides the Most Merciful deities to be worshipped? 45
