And certainly did We send Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, and he said, "Indeed, I am the messenger of the Lord of the worlds." 46 But when he came to them with Our signs, lo! they laughed at them. 47 And We did not show them a sign but it was greater than its like, and We overtook them with chastisement that they may turn. 48 And they said, 'Sorcerer, pray to thy Lord for us by the covenant He has made with thee, and surely we shall be right-guided.' 49 But when We removed from them the chastisement, behold, they broke their troth. 50 And Fir'aun (Pharaoh) proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Is not mine the dominion of Egypt, and these rivers flowing underneath me. See you not then? 51 Nay! I am better than this fellow, who is contemptible, and who can hardly speak distinctly: 52 "Then why are not gold bracelets bestowed on him, or (why) come (not) with him angels accompanying him in procession?" 53 In this way he fooled his people and they obeyed him: they were a rebellious people. 54 And when they angered Us, We took vengeance on them and drowned all of them, 55 So We made them a bygone fable and a lesson for the latter generations. 56
