And verily We sent Moses with Our revelations unto Pharaoh and his chiefs, and he said: I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds. 46 Then when he came unto them with Our signs, behold! at them they were laughing. 47 And not a sign We shewed them but it was greater than the like thereof; and We laid hold of them with the torment that haply they might turn. 48 And they said: O wizard! Entreat thy Lord for us by the pact that He hath made with thee. Lo! we verily will walk aright. 49 but when We relieved them of the torment, they broke their word. 50 And Fir'aun (Pharaoh) proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Is not mine the dominion of Egypt, and these rivers flowing underneath me. See you not then? 51 Am I not better than this contemptible (man), who can scarcely make things clear (because of the impediment of his speech)? 52 and why have not armlets of gold been bestowed on him and why is there not a train of angels accompanying him?" 53 Thus did he make fools of his people, and they obeyed him: truly were they a people rebellious (against Allah). 54 So when they vexed Us, We took vengeance on them, and We drowned them all. 55 And We made them a precedent (as a lesson for those coming after them), and an example to later generations. 56
