And certainly We sent Musa with Our communications to Firon and his chiefs, so he said: Surely I am the apostle of the Lord of the worlds. 46 But when he brought them Our signs, at once they laughed at them. 47 And not a sign We showed them, but it was greater than its sister sign; and We seized them with chastisement, that haply they should return. 48 'Sorcerer' they said, 'pray to your Lord for us in accordance to the covenant He has made with you, and surely we shall be rightly guided' 49 Then when We had removed from them the torment, behold they were breaking their promise. 50 And Pharaoh caused a proclamation to be made among his people saying: O my people! Is not mine the sovereignty of Egypt and these rivers flowing under me? Can ye not then discern? 51 Am I better or this contemptible man who is scarcely able to express himself? 52 Why then have bracelets of gold not been cast on him, or angels not come with him conjoined?' 53 Thus he incited his people to levity, and they obeyed him: for, behold, they were people depraved! 54 Then when they displeased Us, We inflicted a retribution on them, so We drowned them all together, 55 and so We made them a thing of the past, and an example to those who would come after them. 56
