We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his Council, and he said: 'I am the Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds' 46 Yet when he brought forth Clear Signs from Us, then lo, they burst into laughter. 47 even though each sign We showed them was greater than the previous one. We afflicted them with torment so that they might return [to the right path]. 48 And they said [to Moses], "O magician, invoke for us your Lord by what He has promised you. Indeed, we will be guided." 49 But whenever We removed the suffering from them, lo! they would break their word. 50 And Firon proclaimed amongst his people: O my people! is not the kingdom of Egypt mine? And these rivers flow beneath me; do you not then see? 51 Aye! I am better than this one who is despicable, and well-nigh cannot make himself plain. 52 Then why have there not been placed upon him bracelets of gold or come with him the angels in conjunction?" 53 So when he had brainwashed his people, they followed him; indeed they were a disobedient nation. 54 So when they vexed Us, We took vengeance on them, and We drowned them all. 55 We made them a precedent, an example for later peoples. 56
