We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his nobles. He said, "I am the messenger of the Lord of the Universe," 46 But when he brought to them Our signs they laughed at them, 47 And not a sign We showed them, but it was greater than its sister sign; and We seized them with chastisement, that haply they should return. 48 And they said, “O you magician! Pray for us to your Lord, by the means of His covenant which is with you; we will certainly come to guidance.” 49 Then when We had removed from them the torment, behold they were breaking their promise. 50 And Fir'awn proclaimed among his people, saying: O my people! is not mine the dominion of Misr and witness yonder rivers flowing underneath me? See ye not? 51 I am surely better than this fellow, who is despicable and can hardly make (his meaning) plain! 52 “So why was he not bestowed with armlets of gold? Or angels should have come with him staying at his side!” 53 Thus he incited his people to levity, and they obeyed him: for, behold, they were people depraved! 54 So, when they angered Us, We punished them and drowned them every one. 55 And We made them a precedent (as a lesson for those coming after them), and an example to later generations. 56
