THUS, INDEED, have We sent Moses with Our messages unto Pharaoh and his great ones; and he said: "Behold, I am an apostle of the Sustainer of all the worlds!" 46 But when he brought them Our signs, at once they laughed at them. 47 And not a sign We shewed them but it was greater than the like thereof; and We laid hold of them with the torment that haply they might turn. 48 And they said: magician! supplicate thy Lord for us for that which He hath covenanted with thee; verily we shall let ourselves be guided. 49 But when We eased them of the torment, behold! they broke their word. 50 And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people: 'O my people, do I not possess the kingdom of Egypt, and these rivers flowing beneath me? What, do you not see? 51 Am I not better than this lowly man who can barely express himself? 52 and why have not armlets of gold been bestowed on him and why is there not a train of angels accompanying him?" 53 He (Pharaoh) intimidated his nation, so they obeyed him, for they were a sinning nation. 54 Then when they provoked Our wrath, We took revenge on them and drowned every one of them. 55 We made them a precedent, an example for later peoples. 56
