We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his Council, and he said: 'I am the Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds' 46 Then when he came unto them with Our signs, behold! at them they were laughing. 47 even though each sign We showed them was greater than the previous one. We afflicted them with torment so that they might return [to the right path]. 48 'Sorcerer' they said, 'pray to your Lord for us in accordance to the covenant He has made with you, and surely we shall be rightly guided' 49 When We relieved them from the torment they suddenly turned back on their heels. 50 Then Pharaoh made a proclamation to his people: 'My people, is the kingdom of Egypt not mine and these rivers which flow beneath me? What, can you not see? 51 Or am I [not] better than this one who is insignificant and hardly makes himself clear? 52 Why were then no bracelets of gold shed upon him from above, or angels sent down as a retinue with him?" 53 Thus, he made dimwits out of his people and they followed him. They, certainly, were a sinful people. When they invoked Our anger, 54 So, when they angered Us, We punished them and drowned them every one. 55 And We made them a precedent (as a lesson for those coming after them), and an example to later generations. 56
