And certainly did We send Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, and he said, "Indeed, I am the messenger of the Lord of the worlds." 46 Then when he came unto them with Our signs, behold! at them they were laughing. 47 even though each sign We showed them was greater than the previous one. We afflicted them with torment so that they might return [to the right path]. 48 And they said, 'Sorcerer, pray to thy Lord for us by the covenant He has made with thee, and surely we shall be right-guided.' 49 Yet no sooner did We take away the affliction from them than they broke their pledge. 50 And Pharaoh caused a proclamation to be made among his people saying: O my people! Is not mine the sovereignty of Egypt and these rivers flowing under me? Can ye not then discern? 51 Nay! I am better than this fellow, who is contemptible, and who can hardly speak distinctly: 52 Why, then, have armlets of gold not been set upon him, or angels sent along with him? 53 So when he had brainwashed his people, they followed him; indeed they were a disobedient nation. 54 Then when they displeased Us, We inflicted a retribution on them, so We drowned them all together, 55 And We made them a precedent and example to the later generations. 56
