And verily We sent Moses with Our revelations unto Pharaoh and his chiefs, and he said: I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds. 46 But when he brought to them Our signs they laughed at them, 47 And all the signs We showed them were always greater than the earlier ones; and We seized them with calamities, so that they may return. 48 And they said, 'Sorcerer, pray to thy Lord for us by the covenant He has made with thee, and surely we shall be right-guided.' 49 When We relieved them from the torment they suddenly turned back on their heels. 50 And Pharaoh issued a call to his people, saying: "O my people! Does not the dominion over Egypt belong to me, since all these running waters flow at my feet? Can you not, then, see [that I am your lord supreme]? 51 "Am I not better than this (Moses), who is a contemptible wretch and can scarcely express himself clearly? 52 Why have bracelets of gold not been given to him and why have some angels not accompanied him?" 53 So he made his people unsteady, and they obeyed him; surely they were an ungodly people. 54 So when they vexed Us, We took vengeance on them, and We drowned them all. 55 We made them become of the people of the past and an example for the coming generations. 56
