We sent Moses with Our signs to the Pharaoh and his nobles. He said: "I have been sent by the Lord of all the worlds." 46 But when he brought them Our tokens, behold! they laughed at them. 47 although each sign that We showed them was weightier than the preceding one: and [each time] We took them to task through suffering, so that they might return [to Us]. 48 'Sorcerer' they said, 'pray to your Lord for us in accordance to the covenant He has made with you, and surely we shall be rightly guided' 49 Then when We had removed from them the torment, behold they were breaking their promise. 50 And Pharaoh called out among his people; he said, "O my people, does not the kingdom of Egypt belong to me, and these rivers flowing beneath me; then do you not see? 51 Or am I better than this man, who is contemptible and scarcely makes things clear? 52 Why then have bracelets of gold not been cast on him, or angels not come with him conjoined?' 53 In this way he fooled his people and they obeyed him: they were a rebellious people. 54 So, when they angered Us, We punished them and drowned them every one. 55 And We made them a precedent and example to the later generations. 56
