We also sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his Council, and he said, 'Surely, I am the Messenger of the Lord of all Being.' 46 But as soon as he came before them with Our [miraculous] signs, lo! they derided them, 47 And not a sign We showed them, but it was greater than its sister sign; and We seized them with chastisement, that haply they should return. 48 They said, "Magician, pray to your Lord for us through your covenant with Him (If he saves us from the torment), we shall certainly seek guidance". 49 When We relieved them from the torment they suddenly turned back on their heels. 50 And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Does not the dominion of Egypt belong to me, (witness) these streams flowing underneath my (palace)? What! see ye not then? 51 Am I not better than this contemptible man who can hardly make his meaning clear: 52 and why have not armlets of gold been bestowed on him and why is there not a train of angels accompanying him?" 53 So he incited his people to levity and they obeyed him: surely they were a transgressing people. 54 Then when they displeased Us, We inflicted a retribution on them, so We drowned them all together, 55 And We made them (a people) of the Past and an Example to later ages. 56
