Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the luminious Book. 2 Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- 3 Whereon every wise command is made clear 4 [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, 6 He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. 7 There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. 8 Aye! they're in doubt sporting. 9 But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke 10 Covering the people, this is a painful torment. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the punishment; surely we are believers. 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. 17 Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. 20 "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." 21 Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. 22 So go forth with My servants by night; surely you will be pursued: 23 And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 And the cornlands and the goodly sites 26 And pleasant things wherein they took delight! 27 Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. 28 And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
