Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha. Mim. 1 By oath of this clear Book. 2 We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against Evil). 3 On which all affairs are sorted out and decided 4 Amran (i.e. a Command or this Quran or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), 5 as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. 8 Yet they play about in doubt. 9 So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. 10 Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. 11 O our Sustainer, relieve us of suffering, for, verily, we [now] believe [in Thee]!" 12 How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! 13 But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." 14 Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. 15 But on that Day We will assault them most mightily, and then We shall revenge! 16 ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] 17 Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” 18 And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” 19 I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me. 20 But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” 21 Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. 22 (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. 23 (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," 24 How many were the gardens, springs, 25 and sown fields and splendid mansions, 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; 29
