Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By the Book that makes things clear, 2 We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; 3 On which all affairs are sorted out and decided 4 at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] 5 As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. 7 There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. 8 But they are in doubt, amusing themselves. 9 So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, 10 enveloping all mankind, [and causing the sinners to exclaim:] "Grievous is this suffering! 11 Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". 12 How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. 15 On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." 22 (He was told): “Set out with My servants by night for you will certainly be pursued. 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 How many gardens and water-springs they left behind! 25 sown fields, and how noble a station, 26 And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. 29
