Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim 1 By the luminious Book. 2 We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) 3 On that [night] was made clear, in wisdom, the distinction between all things [good and evil] 4 By a command from Us – indeed it is We Who send. 5 As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); 6 the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them - if you could but grasp it with inner certainty! 7 there is no deity save Him: It is He who gives both life and death -- He is your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers, 8 Yet they are lost in doubt and play. 9 Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. 10 Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. 11 "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." 12 But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, 13 yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” 14 Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. 15 But on that Day We will assault them most mightily, and then We shall revenge! 16 ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 "And exalt not (yourselves) against Allah. Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority. 19 I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." 22 "Journey by night with My devotees," (it was said); "you will certainly be pursued. 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 They left - how many! of gardens and springs. 25 corn-fields, gracious mansions, 26 And pleasant things wherein they took delight! 27 Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. 28 Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, 29
